What is Scar REvision Surgery?

Scar revision involves a number of treatment options to alter and improve the appearance of a scar, such as injectable treatments or shave excision. Surgical scar treatment can improve the way scars look by changing the size, depth, or color. Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Vu Ho minimize scars so that the area is more consistent with the surrounding skin tone. Although no scar can ever be completely erased, today’s scar treatments can result in a significantly less obvious mark. The most important step in the treatment of scars is a consultation with Dr. Ho where he will work closely with you to find the best custom treatment plan to make your scar as smooth and invisible as possible.

how does scar revision surgery work?

Various types of scars call for different techniques. When scars arise from a problem with a previous surgery, the original incision can be reopened and the skin can be moved around to minimize the appearance of the scar. In some cases, the scar can be moved to a different location to make it less visible. With raised scars, dermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing procedures can be used to remove the upper layers of skin to make the scar smoother and more even with the rest of the face. Keloid scars, which are raised, can be surgically removed to improve the appearance. Depending on the type of scar and its condition, our team will use general or local anesthesia. The surgery is considered outpatient where the patient can return home the same day.

What Can I Expect After Scar REvision Surgery?

After surgery, pain, discomfort, redness, swelling, and bruising can be expected. Stitches are usually removed in a week following surgery, if applicable. Strenuous exercises and activities will need to be avoided for the first week or so. In addition, patients should keep their head elevated while sleeping. There will be multiple follow-up appointments so the surgeon can ensure the treatment site is healing properly. It can take up to a full year or more for the scar to fully heal and for the patient to notice full results.
